The Auckland Based Photography Exhibition That Was Inspired By A Game Of Thrones Quote

An Auckland photographer, Maegan McDowell is about to unveil her latest exhibition. That was all inspired by a quote from  the popular series Game of Thrones.

The exhibition titled “The Rebirth of Flowers” was inspired by the quote, “what is dead may never die”. This is a common saying on the show among those that worship the deity ‘The Drowned God’. The quote resonated so much with Maegan that she decided to create a fine art print series around it.

Maegan is no newcomer to the art and photography world. She’s been involved in beauty, fashion and travel photography for the last ten years. Recently she began to study floristry.

“I would bring home leftover flowers deemed no longer vase-worthy, decomposed enough to no longer be desirable,” she says. “But I saw great beauty in their movement into the next stage of being.”

This next stage of beauty is what inspired her newest exhibition and she began experimenting with taking photographs of aging roses. The visual style of the series has been described as being similar to renaissance paintings, the kind that evoked emotion and often explored the brevity of life.

During the creation of these art prints Maegan says she herself has had her own kind of rebirth. “Through the flowers I have found a kind of empowerment,” she says. “I gave myself space for rediscovery, allowing me to create emphatic works of art full of emotions like strong passion, great love and passing hurt.”

When and where:

The Rebirth of Flowers will be on view from October 29 at 19 Khyber Pass Road, Mount Eden. For more information or to check out the rest of Maegan’s work check out her website or follow her on Instagram.
